Media Views Permalink Associated Press: At Summit, Spain’s King Tells Chavez to 'Shut Up' (11/10/07) by Eduardo Gallardo

A dramatic exchange in which Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez "repeatedly referr[ed] to former Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Aznar as a 'fascist'" gets the typical soap opera treatment from AP. The wire service report treats Chavez's remark as a self-evident slur--but in fact, Aznar had been part of the fascist youth movement, and his party is the one formed by fascist sympathizers after Franco's death—facts that would have helped AP's readers understand the exchange.
